POINT-OF-CARE RESEARCH CONTEST – ABBOTT POC EXPERIENCE 2020

This regulation (“Regulation”) is intended to guide researchers in the submission of papers for the POINT-OF-CARE RESEARCH CONTEST – ABBOTT POC EXPERIENCE 2020 (“Contest”), reporting requirements in regard to the general structure, eligibility criteria, assessment and other relevant information. Participation in the Contest implies unrestricted acceptance of this Regulation.

  1. CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATING.

1.1. Healthcare professionals who meet the following requirements may participate in the Contest:

a) To live and work professionally in one of the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Trinidad & Tobago, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, or Panama;
b) To have advanced studies in biology, biomedicine, nursing, pharmacy or medicine; and
c) To be legally qualified to practice the profession in the country in which he/she works and/or authorized by international organizations, where applicable, and to have no impediment to practice the profession.

1.1.1. The qualification of the professional will be verified by the Evaluation Committee (defined in the terms of item 3 below).

1.2. It is strictly forbidden the participation of employees, consultants and other third parties linked to Alere S.A., a company incorporated in the Argentine Republic, or other companies incorporated in said country or another, where Alere S.A. and these companies recognize to be subject to the control of the same person or of the same group of persons (“Alere”), and/or linked to members of the Evaluation Committee or their relatives (defined as spouses and relatives within the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity).

1.3. The registration to participate in the Contest, as well as the submission of papers (in the terms of item 2 below) must be completed through the website www.pocday.com until February 21, 2020. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Alere will send a confirmation email to all candidates whose applications have been accepted, until February 28, 2020, based on the data supplied by the professional at the time of registration. Participants who have not received their confirmation of registration by the above date will not participate in the Contest and should assume that Alere did not accept their application. Alere reserves the right to grant, at its sole discretion, a single extension to the submission deadline and/or another, for a maximum period of twenty (20) calendar days, which will apply to all interested parties.

1.4. Only professionals who fully accept all the terms and conditions of this Regulation will be eligible for the Contest, as will be reflected by clicking on “Accepted” at the bottom of this page. Notwithstanding the foregoing, Alere reserves the right to request that participants sign additional documents, as deemed necessary by Alere.

1.5. The submission of papers prepared jointly by more than one healthcare professional is permitted provided that they are all in the same country. In such a scenario, the following rules should be noted:

a) All participating professionals must comply with the requirements of item 1.1 and register under the terms of item 1.3, thereby being bound by all conditions of this Regulation;

b) The group should indicate on the registration form who will be the principal investigator responsible for receiving the Award in a personal capacity, in the case that the paper is selected. The Award may not be shared by the principal investigator with the other professionals that make up the group. These professionals shall agree accordingly henceforth, except for the publication of the works as provided in 4.2.2;

c) Failure to register and/or sign any documents requested by Alere by one of the participants will prevent all participants from receiving the Award, and this will lead to the disqualification of the work.

1.6. The participation of the same professional in more than one paper, even as co-author, is prohibited.

1.7. The veracity of the information contained in the registration form and other documents submitted to Alere, as well as the authenticity of the scientific work submitted, are the sole responsibility of the participating healthcare professionals. All participants declare, hereinafter, that the submitted papers are original works of their authorship, having not committed plagiarism or any other form of misappropriation of authorship. They also undertake to exempt and indemnify Alere for any claim of rights by third parties for any reason, without prejudice to any legal measures that may be used by Alere to recover possible losses and damages.

1.8. Papers containing identical information or whose similarity reasonably suggests plagiarism, photocopying or other misconduct (as determined by the Evaluation Committee) will be disqualified.

1.9. The participants will respond in and out of court for any initiative or lawsuit in connection with the originality, ownership of intellectual property or potential plagiarism of the papers presented, thus releasing Alere from any liability in this regard and fully indemnifying it for any and all damages arising from such initiatives or lawsuits.

  1. SUBJECT AND DELIVERY OF THE PAPERS.

2.1. Research work in the area of POC must be developed using products freely chosen by the participant(s), presenting the benefits in the clinical use of referred products for infectious or cardiometabolic diseases. Alere will not donate and/or loan products.

2.2. Any deviation from the established subject-matter will lead to the disqualification of the work, such decision shall be at the sole discretion of the Evaluation Committee.

2.3. To be accepted, the paper must be formatted in A4 size, Arial font size 12, with double spacing between paragraphs, and submitted to Alere in 01 (one) electronic copy in .pdf format, fully legible. All works must contain, under penalty of disqualification:

a) Executive Summary of a maximum of three (03) pages;

b) On the first page:
i. Concise title, without abbreviations, in capital letters, and bold;
ii. Name and surname of the authors, with emphasis on the name of the author who will present the work, which will be considered as the principal investigator; and
iii. Name of the institution(s) to which the authors belong, address, telephone number and e-mail address. The authors shall obtain the prior and express approval of said institutions to carry out the work, and this authorization shall be delivered to Alere with the paper;
iv. Area under which the work is submitted: Infectious or Cardiometabolic Diseases.

c) Introduction addressing the fundamental aspects of the research, rationale, and objective;

d) Materials and Methodology;

e) Ethical aspects, including the need for committee approval;

f) Results and Discussion;

g) Conclusion and Recommendations;

h) Bibliography; and

i) Signature of authors.

2.4. Papers must be submitted with the registration form, by February 21, 2020, through the portal [email protected], using the subject “Abbott POC Experience 2020 + [Infectious/Cardiometabolic Diseases] + [full name of principal investigator].”

2.4.1. After the submission of the paper, Alere will not accept any changes or additions.

2.5. Alere shall confirm the receipt of the papers, with the confirmation of registration, by e-mail until 28 February 2020, taking into account that the confirmation will be merely informative. All papers received and adherence to this Regulation shall be subsequently validated by Alere, and timely communicated to participants. To be clear, Alere is not responsible for receiving incomplete papers or for not receiving any at all.

2.6. Following receipt, the papers will be sent to the Contest Coordination and the Evaluation Committee, and the latter will independently select the best paper from each area.

  1. EVALUATION COMMITTEE.

3.1. The evaluation and selection of the awarded papers will be performed by an Evaluation Committee, designated by Alere to this end and made up of 03 (three) members. The members of the Evaluation Committee will be hired and paid by Alere to evaluate the papers, and they will do so independently, in accordance with the provisions of this Regulation.

3.2. The selection criteria will be as follows:

a) Originality and unprecedented nature;
b) Presentation and clarity of information;
c) Suitability of the methodology to the proposed objectives; and
d) Coherence and consistency between objectives and conclusions.

3.3. The evaluation procedure shall consist of the following:

a) The Committee shall carry out a formal analysis, evaluation and judgement concerning the requirements established in this Regulation. Any paper not compliant, totally or partially, with any of the requirements shall be eliminated;

b) Once the formal analysis of compliance with the requirements of this Regulation has been carried out, the paper will be sent to 03 (three) evaluators for assessment of merit and subsequent opinion. During this evaluation, a score of zero (00) to ten (10) shall be assigned, with or without approval, for the next assessment phase;

c) Papers obtaining unanimous approval in the first assessment phase will be sent to the evaluators for final assessment. In this stage, the evaluators will determine the rank order, at their discretion, of each paper;

d) At the end, the scores of the final assessment stage shall be added together, the ranking order being the result of the total sum of such scores. In the event of a tie, the scores of the first assessment phase will be considered as a secondary tie-breaking criterion.

3.4. The Evaluation Committee may deliberate if the majority of its members are present.

3.5. The Evaluation Committee shall have until March 20, 2020, to evaluate the papers received.

3.6. The result will be announced on March 27, 2020, on the Contest portal, www.pocday.com. Alere will publish only the results of the awarded papers.

3.7. Winners of the Research Contest will be notified in writing of the result through the channels mentioned in item 1.3 of this Regulation. It is the responsibility of each candidate to keep his or her contact details up to date, and to communicate any changes in the registration form to Alere through the website indicated in item 2.4 above. In the event that the author of one of the researches is not found within 05 (five) calendar days after the date of result disclosure, he/she will be automatically disqualified.
3.8. The decisions of the Evaluation Committee shall not be subject to appeals or challenges at any stage of the awarding process.

3.9. A participant who waives receipt of the Award or who has been disqualified shall not be entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for the Award.

  1. AWARDING.

4.1. In the event that a minimum of 10 (ten) papers are submitted and classified within the terms of item 2.4, the best paper of each area, i.e., Infectious and Cardiometabolic Diseases, shall be awarded according to the criteria indicated in this Regulation, as follows (the “Award” and/or the “Awards”):
 Invitation to participate as a speaker at a Regional or International Congress of scientific interest where Alere participates, with covered expenses (airfare, transfers, accommodation and meals) according to Alere’s internal policies and the funding of the publication of the paper in a scientific journal (to be defined by Alere); and
 Funding of the publication of the paper in an international scientific journal (to be defined by Alere).

In no event will cash or cash equivalent (such as gift cards or purchase vouchers, etc.) be given as Award or a gift, nor will money be offered to compensate for the time spent attending the Symposium, developing the paper, or participating in the Contest.

4.2. The Award is personal and non-transferable.

4.2.1. Alere is exempt from any responsibility vis-à-vis the other authors of the awarded works, given that the Awards mentioned will be delivered only to the researcher indicated as the principal investigator, in the form of this Regulation, except for the publication where all authors will be recorded.

4.2.2. In the event that the principal investigator is unable to attend the Symposium, he/she may transfer the Award to the first indicated co-author, having notified Alere thereof in writing, within the peremptory period of 5 (five) calendar days following notification of the Award. Alere will not have any responsibility towards the other co-authors regarding the delivery of the Award to the principal investigator or its eventual substitution, being the sole and exclusive responsibility of the principal investigator such substitution.

4.3. The participants awarded in the Contest, whether the winner(s) or the researcher indicated as the principal investigator, pursuant to item 1.5, may, at Alere’s discretion, participate in the POC Day 2020 event, at the place and date timely confirmed by Alere, to present the paper in the event in 10 (ten) minutes. If it is not possible for the principal investigator to attend, he/she may transfer the invitation to a co-author in accordance with 4.2.2.
4.3.1. The participation of the awarded author(s) or principal investigator(s) in the POC Day 2020 shall occur without entitlement to any compensation. Alere will pay directly for the participant’s transportation and accommodation expenses (economy-class airfare, ground transportation, food, and accommodation [always modest and reasonable], in accordance with Alere’s travel policy), which are subject to applicable legal provisions. Personal expenses will be the sole responsibility of the winning participant, not including expenses of companions, family members and other third parties.

4.4. All submitted papers, awarded or not, may be exhibited, at Alere’s discretion, in poster format during Alere’s POC Day 2020 event, regardless of any Award, with which the authors agree as of this moment.

  1. COMPLIANCE.

5.1. Upon acceptance of this Regulation and submission of the paper, the participant represents and warrants that:

a) His/her participation in the Contest and eventual receipt of any of the Awards provided for in item 4.1 (where applicable) are pursuant to applicable laws and regulations, such as codes of conduct and internal regulations of the places in which the participant carries out his or her professional activities, anti-corruption rules, regulations and agreements of the health sector, especially the Codes of Ethics issued by the Class Councils to which the participant belongs, and other rules concerning the practice of the profession and the relationship between healthcare professionals and the health products industry;

b) He/she does not hold any position that could generate a conflict of interest with the participation in the Contest;

c) His/her participation in the Contest and the receipt of any of the Awards foreseen in item 4.1 (where applicable) have exclusively scientific purposes, and do not depend on future business contracting or on the creation of any type of exclusivity for Alere products or services;

d) All decisions regarding the medical care of patients in his/her clinical practice are and will be based solely on the professional medical judgment of the participant and will be made in the best interest of the patients;

e) He/she will notify all his/her employers about his/her participation in the Contest, obtaining the respective approvals, if applicable. A photocopy of these approvals must be sent to Alere within ten (10) days from the formal request, being the effective delivery of the Award to the winner subject to the presentation of the documents addressed in this item;

f) He/she always and strictly abides by the obligation to not pay, to undertake to pay, to offer, to accept or to undertake to accept any payment, donation or advantage (financial or non-financial), whether as compensation, gift or contribution, from or to any person or organization, public or private, on his or her own account or through third parties, which are or may be considered illegal or dubious; and

g) He/she shall always follow the highest ethical, moral and regulatory principles applicable to his/her activities and shall adhere, in all circumstances, to the legislation applicable in his/her country of practice and residence, including anti-corruption rules.

  1. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS.

6.1. All participants in the Contest, whether awarded or not, authorize, without any cost or encumbrance to Alere, the publication/disclosure of the papers submitted, wholly or partially, with their names, in the media chosen by Alere at its sole discretion (including, but not limited to Internet portals), in any country of the world, for internal or external use of Alere, including, but not limited to the possibility of sharing it with suppliers or clients of Alere, agreeing that the author(s) of the work will be cited in the referred publication or disclosure. The publication or disclosure covered by this clause, given that it is duly authorized under the terms of this Regulation, shall not give rise to any right to compensation or indemnification for copyright.

6.2. The registrants agree with the Contest result disclosure, hereinafter agreeing with the use of their image and voice, by Alere, for the Award disclosure by any means, for a period of two (2) years from the result disclosure under the terms of item 3.6. This period may be postponed by written agreement between the parties.

6.3. This Regulation shall be translated into English and Spanish. In case of conflicts, the original Spanish version shall prevail.

6.4. This Regulation, the terms of adhesion to the Contest, and the Contest shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Argentina. The National Commercial Courts of the City of Buenos Aires (Argentina) are elected for the solution of eventual conflicts of interpretation and/or disputes.
